Approximately 15 kilometers from Parys and one an half hours drive from Johannesburg International Airport, is Kommandonek Game Reserve. This is a private wild life sanctuary edged by the beautiful Vaal River traveling through a range of scenic mountains. These mountains were created by a meteor the size of Table Mountain which impacted the earth two billion years ago. The impact of the Meteor caused a huge crater to form with erosion and deposition over time that created the Vredefort Dome. The crater of approximately 380km includes Vredefort, Parys and Venterskroon. The outer margins of the Dome reach up to Johannesburg, Klerksdorp, and Welkom.
The Vredefort Dome was awarded the Unesco World Heritage Status in 2005 because of this renowned impact site and its unique geomorphology and geology and is one of The Seven Natural Wonders of South Africa.
Kommandonek Game Reserve is situated in the center of this 80 kilometer wide meteor basin and supports a wild life conservancy which includes 150 different types of bird species and game. Giraffe, zebra, oryx, eland, kudu, red hartebeest, water buck, impala, and numerous other smaller game species live here in harmony with nature. Come and enjoy game viewing from an open game drive vehicle, or walking along the accredited hiking trails to experience incredible views and breathtaking scenery.
Within this spectacular bushveld setting, Kommandonek provides a relaxed atmosphere for groups and families to enjoy birthday parties, school reunions, club functions, business conferences, team building exercises, tour groups, sport teams, weddings, birding, hiking, and year-end corporate functions. The Boma and the River Venue are perfect venues for these self-catering small group functions or independent catered events.
We aim to deliver our best at all times to ensure that your visit and outdoor experience is an ultimate success!
